Hello! I hope you're all doing well! The Timeline has finally computed your mission objective — sorry it took so long! Sometimes he gets a little slow. Now, I know he may seem— different, but he's always been correct! Just... ah, be careful when talking to him? He's a learning machine, and all he really knows is about missions, so sometimes he says some strange things when he goes off topic. But don't worry! He tries his best. I'll connect you to him now.

It'll do you no good getting worked up over this. Calm down. Losing your head right now isn't something that you need.

[He realizes that Evan isn't snappish at him, per se, but he does his best to talk the younger man down.]

However volatile some of the other ALASTAIR members might be, there's surely someone among them who might be able to sit them down before they do something brash. Even without the information that we need, it's still vital that we talk about this.

I know! I know. I just--!

[The younger man makes a noise of total frustration, fluttering his hands. But he also closes his eyes and sucks in a deep breath, letting it out in a huff that sounds a little defeated.]

This all just feels like such a terrible idea, in so many ways, and I'm very nervous it's going to end up being a terrible execution of a terrible idea. I mean -- maybe this is my first mission, but I've never seen us all really band together the way we're going to have to for this operation. Everyone's such a free agent, I mean, we can't even seem to agree on whether we should try and attack these goddesses, much less how.

...I really don't want to die on my first mission.

You won't.

[There's a quiet affirmation in his voice as he speaks, before he bites his bottom lip. He can't very well guarantee Evan's safety more than his own nephew, but Ford inclines his head, letting out a breath.]

No one will blame you if you stay behind, you know?

What good would that do? [He sounds even more resigned, but also calmer. This is a question he's turning over and over in his head, and he looks at Ford still obviously nervous but clearer-eyed.]

By all accounts, the last time anyone made an aggressive move at Nalanni, she massacred their entire species. If anybody from ALASTAIR makes an attempt on her life and fails, I'm under no illusions that she won't try and do the same to the rest of us. Whatever the plan ends up being -- if there even ends up being a plan -- I'll be there.

[He won't like it and he will be terrified, but he will be there.]

You're a brave young man.

[It's an almost solemn admission, nodding with a wry smile crossing his face. The younger man has a point, which makes him more worried about his nephew. Ford bites his bottom lip, nodding.]

Yes, I suppose you're right. Even if we do go against her, there's bound to be consequences if we can't handle her. Goddesses are fickle at their worst, dangerous at their best, and many don't have their powers.

[It really did look like a lose/lose situation.]

[Evan shakes his head, rejecting the notion of bravery as if it's stung him. He's not brave, he's just about eighty percent sure he's going to die either way. Who knew? If that's the trick for bravery, he's not sure he wants to be brave. He stares back at Ford, brows furrowed.]

Don't get me wrong, if I thought it would be as easy as hiding round the other side of the island...

I hate that we can't move to and from Oska. What I wouldn't give for access to the library, or... [He goes wide-eyed, thinking of something, and stares at Ford in horror.] Shit, what are Mabel and Dipper going to do during the fight? There's no way ALASTAIR would force a couple of kids to be here for that one, would they?

[He doesn't know Mabel's gone. It's been a long week.]

[He hums a bit in agreement. It would be easier to go between ALASTAIR's headquarters and their current location, but he doubted that they would be given that much of an option in these current circumstances. Ford goes to respond before something Evan says makes him close his mouth, lips pursed together and turning his attention away from his communication device.]

Well, Dipper has promised me to stay out of trouble. ALASTAIR...shifted Mabel to another another unit just before we came back.

[He shifts a bit, running his free hand through salt-and-pepper hair. At least he only had one twin to worry about now, but the separation still hurt since Mabel had been a presence in his life for much the last few weeks. And it must hurt even more for Dipper especially.

Ford had an inkling of how that felt after all, to be separated from your twin by dimensions.]

[Evan exclaims surprise and dismay. But a moment later he furrows his brow, really considering why they might have moved Mabel. It's an unsettling thought, that their teammates can just be shuffled around at will, but...]

That's.... I can't help but wonder if that has something to do with the upcoming battle. But why wouldn't they move the rest of the kids, too, then? That doesn't seem right.

I have been mulling over the same thing, believe me.

[Why Mabel? Why not both her and Dipper? Why not the other children among ALASTAIR's ranks? Why not hose of them who had no chance against two goddesses? There were some things that were a mystery as to the whole thing, and Ford purses his lips together in a small grimace before he sighs.]

I suppose I'm grateful that at the very least she is out of harms way.

I suppose so. But it feels, so, so slapdash in a way, doesn't it? [Maybe Evan is fretting for the fate of his young friend. Mabel had seemed such an impulsive thing that Evan had been deeply relieved when she'd let him know she had family here to keep her in check. He frowns deeply, rubs his face, and then looks at Ford again, trying to shake it off. After all, the older man was probably worrying an order of magnitude worse than Evan possibly could over someone he'd known such a short time, and here he was, harping on it and probably making everything worse.]

I'm sorry. I... well, I'm sure she's fine.

[personal profile] weirdologist 2016-05-25 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
It's okay.

[No, it's not okay, but at the moment Ford closes his eyes and lets out a small sigh, and all of a sudden he feels every bit his age. He's not used to worrying about others, and he can feel the slight panic in his chest ebb to a dull throb. At the very least he got to spend time with his niece before her departure, and make up for his...rather harsh assessment of her.]

She wouldn't want you to be sad about her leaving.

Yeah? [For all that, Evan had not known Mabel all that well. Worried about her, sure, but she was a thirteen-year-old girl who had jumped at the chance to go running through lava tunnels, anyone would worry about that.

But Ford suddenly looks weary with worry and Evan feels a clench in his chest for having brought the matter up. He composes his expression, and offers the older man a sympathetic look.]

Then she wouldn't want you to be sad about it, either.

When we get back to Oska, you should ask if ALASTAIR allows for correspondence with other units. I'm sure if they can, they'd make special dispensation for the sake of family, right?

You got me there.

[He chuckles softly, drawing his free hand through his hair. Yes, he should take his own advice, shouldn't he? Ford lets his lips quirk before he nods, inwardly admiring the younger man's optimism.]

One would think. I'm sure Dipper would like to keep in touch with her if he could.

I imagine. He's probably not the only one, either. Mabel made a lot of friends while she was here, didn't she?

[Certainly, Evan had seen the young woman pop up in pretty much every social group among the recruits, a singularly gregarious creature. He'd found it remarkable how someone so young could be so sure of herself socially, but there she'd been.]
