futurology | video: un: Red Five

[Thanks to an upbringing on a planet that might have been a pretty hellish rock overall, but was still more advanced than many when it came to technology, Luke has no problem with the whole sending messages in video or holo form. The problem is all in the tone. Is he supposed to be Lieutenant Skywalker, hero of the Alliance? Just Luke Skywalker, farmboy? Both? Neither?]

[Good start, professional, mature, sure of himself. Too bad its ruined a bit by the squidge suddenly careening into the picture. It's one of the flying ones and while it may not be able to fly particularly high yet that hasn't stopped it from attempting to break the current squidge airspeed record. Slamming into Luke's leg hasn't derailed it in the slightest. Instead it makes the most of the opportunity to begin climbing upwards, apparently intent on using Luke's shoulders or head as a launching pad.

Any attempt at professionalism is forgotten, as is the recording itself, as Luke focuses all of his attention on trying to convince the thing to stop. It's far from dignified; a lot of grabbing at and then losing hold of the wriggling squidge, a lot of half-joking, half-pleading statements, most along the lines of "C'mon now, buddy, do you really need to do that?" and "Don't you think that's a little too high?" and "I know you want to fly, but you're not going to get there by throwing yourself into space."

If Luke actually allowed himself time to think about it he might feel some sympathy for Uncle Owen and his constant struggle to keep his nephew's feet firmly on the ground.]

So the point is-- [The squidge is at least slightly more under control now, settled for the moment in Luke's arms, but still giving a halfhearted wiggle every now and then as if to prove that if it wanted to it could still be fighting the good fight for freedom and altitude. Luke looks a little out of breath.] Does anyone else out there with a flying one have any good tips on keeping them out of trouble?

Greetings, Lieutenant Skywalker. My squidge cannot fly, but perhaps teaching yours their limits will bring them understanding on when too much is too much.

If they have begun to fly before you taught them to heed you, I cannot say. (She has the look of a worried mother. ~~Yes, someone has become attached to the little beings.~~) Try to be strict, perhaps? Lower your voice?

A leash. Maybe.

You might want to try a leash. A simple yet elegant solution to the handling of unruly things.

[There's something dryly amused in his voice, but the way he says it is suggestive of a private joke, something funny only to him.]

Thirding the leash. Or hand it off to someone around here who can fly. Like, I dunno, Laedo. I'm sure he'd be fine with it.

( his squidge can fly, but his little one has never tried to fly so voraciously as Luke's, so it might not be the best of advice. he tried though. )

Ren doesn't turn on the video feed right away. For a long time, he stares at the video post, contemplating his young uncle's face, feeling something ugly turning in his stomach. How could this infernal place continue to taunt him with some of the youngest forms of the ghosts from his past? He finds himself full of hatred -- for ALASTAIR, for Luke, and for a moment he even feels hatred for Anakin.

For this, he will don his helmet. A young Skywalker will know the threat that is Darth Vader -- and even if it isn't Vader's mask he wears, he will hopefully get the message.]

If you cannot manage it yourself, then you do not deserve to mentor it.
