( he expected the request. it can't really surprise him. it's what one does for a friend, is it not? be at the side of the person that needed you, and after the death of someone so dear it is inarguable, especially when Achilles asks him to take part.

yet even heartless, the idea of watching animals slaughtered only to burn is asking extraordinarily much.

ALASTAIR granted me a gift to hear the words of animals, and I am not sure I could bear to hear them slaughtered. ( animals feared death as much as humans did, and there was no lack of terror when their lives were about to end. Graham doesn't agree with the tradition of killing animals to properly mourn. it's difficult for him not to argue the waste of life — why must more die when it would no sooner bring back the loss?

it is only respect of grief that silences him. at least for now.
