[the video opens to display the... somewhat incriminating desk of one rin tohsaka. are those vials and knives? yes, those are vials and knives. a few of the vials contain weird-colored liquids but don’t think about it too much.

apparently this is no reason for a tiny cygnet not to be hopping all over everywhere, chirping happily and nibbling away at a slice of apple rin holds between chopsticks. the gray downy baby swan wears a black collar inlaid with beautiful amethysts and diamonds. lazily leaning her cheek onto her hand, she speaks.]

I’ve developed a means of repelling that godawful holiday plant and withering any sprigs of mistletoe in your immediate vicinity. Simply state clearly,

"Verkümmern, Mistel."

And they’ll die. The catalyst for the enchantment has been sprinkled all across Chantes, so the spell should work wherever you are. Just don’t say the words wrong; I can’t be held responsible for what might happen, in that case.

[r.i.p. thirst. anyway, rin reveals a strange object that those more modern-familiar in alastair will recognize as a bedazzler gun.]

[rin sets down the apple (much to baby swan's dismay!) and calls to the servant carrying a tea tray behind her.]

[a tall man in black armor and a pink apron glances over his shoulder. only his back is visible.

she spins her finger, gesturing for him to turn around. he does so with a rather impressive line face. there's a sword bedazzled out of shiny silver rhinestones stuck right to the front of his apron, just at chest level. rin faces the network again.]

Can anyone tell me what this [she lifts up the bedazzler gun and frowns in disgust/confusion.] is? The designs it creates are awfully tacky.

[ it only takes that little pause from rin for olivia's face to go completely red, gaze now darting away in her usual, bashful manner. ]

O-Oh, um. Right...! I haven't, uh. I mean not at all since that first da— um.

[ maybe it's best they just don't bring it up. ]

V-Verkuhm... Verkoomerrn.. Missile?

[of course. rin moves on as though the mention of the past never came up.]

Well, I'll tell you one thing you need to work on. Utter the entire phrase completely, without stopping or false starts.

[ she winds up just blurting it out, ] Verkoom Misile?

[n-no, olivia...]

But take your time, too. Speak gradually.

[ she tried... ]

Oh gosh... I don't know. Maybe I shouldn't — I might just make things worse..!

You won't... make things worse... [well, probably. her eyebrow is twitching faintly but don't worry about that!] Although I guess the pronunciation may not be so possible in some cases... Do you have any friends who could speak for you?

Um, maybe? [ she certainly doesn't sound too convinced by it, but. ] I could ask around... What language is that? It sounds beautiful.

It's German. A language from my home world.

German? [ that word, at least, does not end up so clumsily on her tongue. ] It sounds beautiful! Is that what you normally speak back home?

No, not normally. [rin offers a small smile.] My family has a mixed heritage. Some of our traditions in terms of magecraft have European roots.

Gosh, it sounds so fascinating... Is everyone in your family a mage like you?

Well, my mother wasn't.

Oh. I hope that didn't make her feel left out...

[a pause, and,] Her side of the family was not actively magi any longer, but they were able to produce children with great magical talent.

[ she quiets a little. ]

If that's the only thing you can say about your mother... it must be a point of pride for you, right?

I can say a lot of things about her.

[describing why her father married her mother isn't so weird, in her eyes.]

[ it may not be the only thing rin can say about her mom, but there's something to be said when it's the first thing she says.

still, olivia feels as if she's transgressed a little here, and hastens to move along. ]

W-Well — I'm sure she's a lovely lady, regardless. I mean — she'd have to be, to have a daughter like you.

Ah— [rin blushes a little. raising one eyebrow, she asks,] Are you complimenting me?

[ olivia blinks a little, looking on uncertainly. ]

U-Um. Yes...? —sorry, [ she says in a rush, ] should I not have?

N-No, it's okay, it's just... [hmm, how to phrase it.] We don't really know each other that well, so that's awfully nice of you to say...
