[Even after the introduction and brief period to adapt, Meallan isn't quite convinced that this isn't the Fade as he finds himself in a strange, new land. The buildings in particular don't help much, seemingly growing out of the earth or nature itself, like some new twist on the stories of how his people long ago made their homes in the trees, bending their shapes with magic.

But then he sees a person that looks like they're part deer somehow go by in the distance and the idea that maybe this is somewhere else entirely seems a lot more likely. He feels like he might be gaping just a little, like a shemlen who's never seen a Dalish clan before.

Giving himself a little shake, Meallan reaches for the amulet around his neck that had been so helpful so far and lifts it to his face, doubtfully turning it over in his fingers. Apparently all he needs to do is concentrate on wanting other people to see and hear him and they will, but he can't honestly tell if it's working or not, even if everyone else is likely seeing a very doubtful looking elf right now.]

Hello? [He pauses and shakes his head.[ Creators, that voice should have said what to do if this doesn't work. Or how to tell if it doesn't. Who knows if there's anyone else lost out in wherever this place is, shouting at their jewelry for hours on end.

[Still silence, so he lets the amulet thump back against his chest, hand rising to card through his hair.]

All right then. Either someone will answer or they won't, I suppose. In the meantime, there has to be more people around here somewhere.

[The fact that he had actually been aiming to get an answer like this sort of escapes Meallan's mind as an image of a man suddenly appears in front of him and he recoils with a yelp like a cat suddenly drenched by a bucket of water. Instinctively he reaches out to shove the image back further and put some distance between them, but it doesn't work very well and mostly makes him look like he's having a moment.

Which he sort of is but anyway.]

Fenedhis! What kind of magic is this? Are you... Are you inside this amulet? Is that what the voice meant?

[ aw. s'almost cute, tbh. but not in a patronizing or mocking way, more like in a sympathetic way, because badou himself has just gotten the hang of these things and a part of it still kinda weirds him out, in all honesty.

he just happens to have enough nicotine on his person (and in his person) to help the transition go a lot smoother. ]

Dunno a lick of magic, so your guess on how this thing's doing the thing it's doing is as good as mine. [ probably even better, tbh. ]

But nah, I ain't in it. I'm outside, actually. [ he holds a hand out in a lazy sweep to gesture to the scenery around him — he appears to be sitting by the shoreline, surrounded by a number of fallen coconuts. ]

[Meallan tilts his head, trying to see more of the other man's surroundings and feeling slightly more confused when it doesn't work that way. It's not really a window to another location then it seems, although he's still hardpressed to think of what it is.]

This is... [He gives an amused snort and half shrugs.] Well I'm not certain what it is really, but it's useful. I wish magic like it existed in Thedas, though I suppose eluvians come close.

[ badou grunts a little at that word — magic — and it's clear from that response and the way his expression seems to flatten that he is of the sort that do not often deal with it. in fact, he'd say the only kind of magic he's ever experienced back home would be narrowly avoiding death despite his line or work, and that's more miracle than magic anyway.

still, he ain't about to rain on anyone's parade, so there is a wry half-grin on his lips before long. ]

Yeah, s'a real riot. I'd stay away from the texting function, myself. Heard that thing can read your thoughts real easy, send 'em out to the whole network like it ain't got a care. Dunno if it's ever worked out badly for someone yet, but I'm willing to bet it's only a matter of time.

And has anything unfortunate ever happened to someone? [Meallan asks with interest, because it might be worth knowing if these things have ever, say, destroyed a person in a massive explosion (he's been there once already and would rather not see if he could survive a second). He's interested as well in the speaker herself: she looks almost Qunari, except not quite.]

And if you don't mind my asking, are you half-Qunari?

Full... troll? [His brow furrows as Meallan looks at her more closely. Other than the horns and the skin colour, she really doesn't look that much different from a human, at least as near as he can tell.]

I take it that's something different where you're from? You don't look anything like what the stories describe trolls being in my world.

[It's... a little strange to get writing like this, when Meallan is far more familiar with letters sent via raven or other means. Still, considering he's missing his dominant hand now, being able to talk over distances and even sent letters of a sort without writing them out is a lot more convenient.]

About as well as expected considering what brought me here. [He considers the text again.] Who's 'we'? Are there more than one of you there?

I've seen hedgehogs before. They're a lot smaller, among other things. And covered in spikes.

Yes. Apparently I fell through a rift? And then I took this amulet and was sent here. I've gotten the impression it's a common situation?
