[Just Evan's voice comes through the network, and quietly at that. It's some terrible wee hour of the morning, that liminal time when no one should really be awake. The moon has set, not that Evan has his curtains open to let the stars interrupt his small bubble of quiet.

At home he'd pop on a tablet, see if any of his friends from other timezones were online, shoot the shit before sleep took him again. Here, there's no such such luck for an easy distraction, but perhaps the ALASTAIR recruits can make use of the same principles.]

Anyone else awake?

[Insomniacs unite: surely there's got to be one or two other night-birds out there.]

[The first person whose feed pops up leaves Evan staring askance. There's something about the figure that nibbles at his memory, but he's sure he'd remember if ALASTAIR had picked up another kid.]

[Meallan is awake having had a restless night of his own, and deciding there's little to be done about it had gone for a walk outside, the cool wind and the stars overhead helping to drive away the images that had haunted his sleep.

So when he turns his jewellery on to answer, Evan gets the sight of his eyes catching the light as a cat's do, which might not be the most reassuring image.]

Trouble sleeping, Evan?

[Those eyes catch him for a moment, suitable as they seem to be in the deep quiet of the heaviest part of the night. The flash crawls goosebumps up his spine that don't quite abate when his rational mind reassures him that this is just a fellow recruit.

Oh,, and that fellow recruit, at that. Evan sits up a bit straighter at his desk.]

Oh, uh. I mean, not much more trouble than usual.

[That's half a lie: he wakes up about half of the nights back home, but after Nalawi it's been different. Waking up to nightmares is quite a bit less fun than waking up naturally.]

[Serene doesn't take her bracelet off nowadays as she doesn't want to be woken by an emergency and then dash out. Usually she can sleep through the little pings but tonight she's been tossing in her sleep and ended up with her hand jammed under her cheek. The ping sounds right in her ear, rousing her.

She mumbles, her voice hoarse with sleep.]

Hmm? I wasn't. Who is this...?

[She could look at her jewel, but she's gone and closed her eyes again]

[What he had not been expecting was to have woken someone. He sits up straighter, feeling an immediate stab of shame for that sleepy voice. He doesn't quite recognize it, though he can tell it's someone he'e met.]

Oh, uh, sorry, I didn't mean to wake you. [Does this person keep their jewellery on all night?] Don't worry about it, go back to sleep, I'll shut this channel down.

[There's a shade of humor in Evan's voice. Tony certainly is too new to know it, but Evan's very first use of the mass messaging system had been to take a survey.]

You know, in Midgard they have all-night diners where you can acquire a variety of breakfast foods deep into the night or, for the more uneventful, early into the morning?

Midgard. [Mythology has never been the focus of his studies, but he knows he recognizes the term. Evan's trivia-brain does not fail to disappoint, as he Ahs.] You're referring to... well, I'd say Earth, but it does rather seem Earth isn't the only place where humans live, is it?

Well, we've got the kitchens here, though it doesn't quite have the same ambiance as a Denny's at four a.m., does it?

Guess we can all have messed up sleep schedules together now

I feel that's somehow appropriate, given what we know of the upcoming mission. From what I've heard, monitoring any sort of newborn ends in very little sleep for the guardian.

I suppose those of us used to it will have an advantage.

No more than usual, really. I'm fairly used to being up at night. I'm usually up for an hour around now.

[That's about halfways true. He is often up at night, being the sort who wakes up naturally in the night and can get back to sleep, but... lately it's been harder to get back to sleep. Too much thinking back on Nalawi, too much thinking about the nightmares that certain parts of that mission spawned.]

I read an interesting article a few years ago, actually, that suggested that before the advent of things like street lights that make it much easier to go out at night -- I mean, at least on my world -- humans used to do this quite regularly. That is, sleep for a few hours, wake for a few hours, go back to sleep for a few more...

I wonder if we're not still in the majority without realizing it?

[Perhaps foolishly, Evan had not anticipated the remarkable turnout to his message. More fool him, he supposes.]

I wonder if we shouldn't start some sort of late night meetups. Convene in the library with tea, swap stories of what we'd all be doing if we were at home.

Of course, that's liable to end up just being a lot of 'staring out the window wondering why I'm not asleep', I suppose.
