They're not
aliens
per se? Just a different type of organism. The Aragami - they're from Earth, though.
[ The will of the Earth to cleanse its surface and rebuild a new world order... something like that. ]
We have ways to fight them, but not eradicate them, so it's been in a sort of standstill since then.
