You're born with the ability to sense and manipulate the 'small science' in things, whether it's fire, life or metals, that sort of thing. There's different types, most people who are born with it can only do one kind. And in most countries, Grisha are sold and traded for their skills like commodities. Best case, you join up with the Ravkan army in exchange for relative freedom.
Basically if you're born a Grisha and you don't hide it, you're looking at a future of servitude one way or another.
