The point is that operating under the assumption that safeguards are in place will only embolden a team with a proven record of escalation.

Yes, we will try to establish contingencies in case of discovery. But a contingency is not security. Ignoring the possible risk to us — and the difficulties in our task if the locals turn against us — there is the risk to those who, repeating what they witnessed, may then be classified as insane or dangerous by their own world. I'm not saying abandon victims; but don't trust on the existence of a contingency to cover for you in case of a breach.
