[It's the first time that Merlin's broadcasted a video of his own, normally content to just poke his nose into others. He's sitting at a table, chin propped up on his fist, the universal pose of Deep Thought.]

I've been thinking a lot lately. [And that would be the point where Arthur would inevitably have something to say about that. It feels...odd, being able to continue without interruption. And not in an entirely good way.] About the humans and the goblins, but mostly about those who found themselves caught in-between. It's difficult, living your life in secret, wondering where you fit in, if you fit in at all.

[He's getting that wounded bear face again, a long expression with sad round eyes.]

I'm not trying to excuse anything terrible that's been done. By anyone. I was only wondering if anyone else knows what it's like to feel like an outcast.

[He grins a little. This is less Merlin being a smartass and more Merlin having a weird since of humor.]

But I guess I can't say that I'm a normal one.

[ oh, he knows this one!! Melan blinks, seeming to realize something. ]

Oh. Do you have a kagune?

[ good attempt. ]

I'm not sure. What's a kagune?

I'm not sure, either.

It appeared to some sort of function-enhancing biological implant. Normal humans don't have them.

It sounds unpleasant.

No, it looked useful.

[ there's nothing unpleasant about big goo tentacles if they help you complete THE MISSION. That said, this line of questioning is clearly going nowhere. ]

I don't see any identifiable abnormalities about you.

I think that might be one of the nicest things anyone's ever said about me.

[ this sarcasm is flying straight over his pointy head. ]

I do not know why you are an outcast. However, there are a wide variety of species here. You shouldn't worry.

On my world it's because I was a sorcerer. But you're right, there's plenty of others who have magic here.

[ he legitimately doesn't seem to recognize the word. ]

Yeah. Someone who uses magic.

[He doesn't seem to know what that is. It's surprising, but not actually terrible.]

Do you not have magic in your world?

[ a look of recognition flickers over his stony features, albeit briefly. ]

No. I hadn't heard of it until arriving here.

But you've seen a lot since then?

... Yes. I have heard the covering in the sky that's blocking the sun is magic. And the markings that were on the jail before preventing entry.

I promise it isn't all bad.

[ he tilts his head a little. ]

I did not think it was bad. It seems very effective and useful to me.

[ misunderstanding... ]

That's a relief.

[Merlin exhales, offering a smile.]

Sometimes people think that magic's all one way or the other, and it's hard to change their minds once they've got them set.

It was described to me as a sort of energy or force. [ for once, some emotion seeps into his voice - confusion. How can they assign something like that a morality? ] If that's true, then it's just a tool that can be used for any purpose. Like electricity.

Electricity?

[Now there's something that's foreign to Merlin. He tips his head curiously.]

Uhm. Like energy, yeah. I always compare it to a sword. I can be used to defend, or it can be used to murder. It all depends on whose hand it's in.

That comparison is equally effective. The people you speak of must not understand the concept of magic.

I don't think they do, no. I just hope that one day they'll listen.
