(1st Record} voice; un: shepherd

Ah, hopefully I'm getting this right....I've only ever replied to others before this. But -- I think I've got it! Hey everyone. I'm Sorey. Been here a while, with some friends from home at least - Edna, Mikleo, and Dezel. Alisha too. But I'm not here to talk about them.

I was talking to Dagny -- one of the people working with ALASTAIR, when she and the Timeline were telling us what they think we should do. I don't want to have to kill anyone -- god or otherwise. But if it does come to that, we can at least prepare. Prepare the Nalawi to survive without their powers. Teach them some of the skills we know. I could teach them to hunt. To fight. Or -- they don't seem to need much if any help in that regard, but....you know. I figured if everyone has something they're good at, that we can pass on to them, it would help them a lot. If the Timeline was right. What does everyone else think? I think it's worth a try.

Sorry, I meant their level of technology in general. For this sort of thing, where I'm from, we have phones.

Phones? So that's how you talk to people far away? We have letters, I guess but nothing like this.

Phones or computers, usually. They're both useful for remote communications.

Letters...people still send them where I'm from, but it's less efficient than other methods. Still, there's something personal about something hand-written.

I have no idea what a computer is, but I guess that is also something to talk to people.

I guess the phones are quicker? Like these? But you're right. Nothing beats hand-writing something. A letter, a poem, or just writing down your thoughts or discoveries.

It's a machine that can be used for a great number of things, but communication is one of them. Recording information, or doing calculations, are other functions, although there are more.

I'm used to filing reports more than personal reflections. Do you tend to write out your thoughts though?

Wow, it sounds like it can do a lot. That's pretty amazing!

Hm, sometimes? I mostly read rather than write but I guess I do sometimes take notes when I'm exploring a new ruin or something.

It is quite the innovation, although ALASTAIR's technology seems to be on an entirely different level.

So you're interested in archaeology?

It sure is. For me at least.

But yeah! I grew up exploring some old ruins, and reading history books and all. Me and Mikleo were always running off to see what we could find. There were a few close calls with some traps though.

I think you're not alone in that.

That sounds pretty dangerous, you both must be the daring type then.

I guess it depends on 'when' or what kind of world we come from. How familiar we might be with this sort of thing.

But I guess we were. Traps are just part of getting to explore and learn from the history of these ruins and what we find though. Most are pretty simple once you figure them.

Those do seem the likeliest factors, from what people have said so far.

Would you say you're an expert on ruin traps now? You never know, we might need that skill one of these days.

Hm. I'm not sure on expert necessarily. Some of the traps here or on other worlds might be different. But I'm used to figuring them out and noticing them back home at least.

You have a good point, each world seems pretty unique unto itself. At least you've got that experience to draw on, though.

I'd be far more likely to spot an ambush than a rigged trap in a ruin.

Exactly!

I'm not so sure on the ambushing. Unless you count sometimes facing groups of hellions at once. But we can handle those pretty easily, mostly.

By hellions, I don't suppose you're referring to some sort of wandering ruffians, are you?

Not exactly. They're -- they're humans, or seraphim, that have been affected by the Malevolence and let their impurities and negativity get to them. But most people still just see them as normal humans, so it can be kind of difficult to deal with them if they're around the towns or something.

[That...admittedly sounds like something out of one of Saiko's video games, but he doesn't make such a comment]

Is it some sort of infection that can be treated, or is it irreversible?

[It can sort of be treated - but only by the Shepherd and their powers of purification. Only the Shepherd and his Squire and seraphim with him can purify the hellions. Others, if they see what is really going on, might just go for the kill, not understanding or not able to help the way we can. But we do our best. Purifying them helps turn them back to normal.]

When you say "the Shepherd" I assume that means there's just one person with that distinction? It sounds like a heavy responsibility for one person, or even just a few.

Yeah. At the moment, it's just me. But before, there were a lot of them all helping at once.

[He sighs, running a hand through his hair.]

But I guess it isn't something we need to worry about here. Titles or all that sort of thing back home. It's like a break. Can't do anything from here but help all these other worlds with these missions.

That sounds like a drastic change, I'd imagine something must have happened for that, but...

That's true. We're best off focusing on what's ahead of us, at least for now. Maybe we'll gain some skill or experience that'll avail us when we're returned to where we come from.

You think so? I mean. We probably will learn a lot, from these missions and each other, but. I'm not sure if we'll remember this or not, back home.

I've wondered about that. Although...wouldn't some things stick? Like muscle-memory from training and experience.

Maybe. I'm not sure how all this works. I'd guess we remember but it's hard to say, since I haven't been back home myself to know how this goes once we get back. You could br right though with the training, maybe.

I suppose only time will tell... Unless the higher-ups decide to be forthcoming on the matter. It doesn't seem we're the first, though it sounded like others had volunteered.
