Now, I'm sure we've done something like this before sometime ago, but you know how it is; people come, people go, and we get new faces all the time. So it's a little hard to keep track of y'all sometimes.

But here we are, and I've god a question.

There's a good lot of us that got magic in us before ALASTAIR made, ah, any offerings as such. Maybe even got some magic in your world, sure.

Suffice it to say, I got some interest in what kind there is -- and what magic is like where you're from. How it works. The variety, the limits.

Always good to know about the trade elsewhere, as it were.

[ haha, oh joy, it's something Jesper definitely has no personal investment in, nope. Not at all. He doesn't have to share this, he could just keep quiet but... but that's not what working in a team is about, right? What's the harm? ]

My world has Grisha. What they do is-- it's not really magic, though some people call it witchcraft and that kind of thing. You're born with the ability to sense and manipulate the 'small science' in things, whether it's fire, life or metals, that sort of thing. There's different types, most people who are born with it can only do one kind. And in most countries, Grisha are sold and traded for their skills like commodities. Best case, you join up with the Ravkan army in exchange for relative freedom.

Basically if you're born a Grisha and you don't hide it, you're looking at a future of servitude one way or another.

[ Totally not speaking from experience or anything. ]

Sounds like hell of a position to be in, and ain't a favorable one. But that's typical: either you're gonna get used, or you're gonna get put down.

Nah, I have a friend who is, she was in the Ravkan army as a kid and everything. But she's a heartrender, she can control your pulse and kill people really easily, so it makes sense that they'd scout her early.

[The pause in the response just might be telling enough -- but he isn't going to hound Jesper for the truth. Far as he can figure, the hand's already been played.]

Damn, no kiddin'! That's one intense skill. Any army would want that; too bad the choice was outta her hands, though.

Yeah, healers and heartrenders are especially valued because of that. I mean, she loves her job don't get me wrong. She's in the intelligence gathering business. People get really loose lipped when you mess with their pulse, apparently.

She still servin' the army, or was she able to leave?

She seems to enjoy it, though I don't know all the details. She's not-surprisingly good at keeping secrets.

[ There's a pause here for a shrug. ]

But I guess you could say she's "on leave."

So, what do you do back home then?

[ Nina Zenik would wreck Audentes single-handedly, pretty much. ]

Crime, mostly. I'm in a gang called The Dregs.

[ He's so proud of it, too. ]

Aw, I remember what it's like bein' in a crew. So I take it you an' Kaz were perpetually up to no good?

[Not that he's judging. Far, far from it.]

You could say that. Kaz is the one in charge, I'm the gang's best sharpshooter.

[ At 17, that's definitely a brag. ]

That's quite the claim. How many of you are sharpshooters?

There's a couple of other guys, but I'm the only one that never misses.
