Since we have our new marching orders, and are preparing to depart relatively soon, I feel as if I should go on record admitting my one weakness.

[she makes an agitated noise.] I'm not good at blending in.

[she holds up her hands, suddenly excited.]

But! But I have learned that the one thing that sets me apart is that I'm considered to be very funny. So by using my natural gift for comedy, I will surely keep the natives off guard while we plan out our strategies.

The problem is I don't have many jokes. The one about the chicken, while hilarious, will probably lose its charm after awhile, so in the name of preserving teamwork, I ask of you, my fellow Audentes, to give me, the great and lovable Peridot, your best jokes.

It's Earth, which I know some things about, though everyone seems to be focusing on the fact that it's a different era of Earth than what I might be used to.

[and considering the massive differences between Era I and Era II in Homeworld, she has reason to be concerned.] The real problem is I haven't interacted with humans so much that I'm required to "blend in." No one in Beach City questions my appearance.

Human culture-- fortunately or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it-- can change very quickly, often as new technologies develop. Rapidly-advancing computer technologies were the major contributor of change from 1990 to 2000. [Which is ... a discussion all on its own, but sort of a tangent.]

Mm, it is unusual. [But, hey, that's what the cloaking devices are for.] ... one thing you'll have going in your favor is that 1993 is in the middle of a decade obsessed with individualism and standing out from the crowd. Language and fashion, especially among young people, was bright and colorful.

[Considering it takes Homeworld THOUSANDS OF YEARS to institute even a gradual change, that's surprising.... But perhaps not that surprising. Humans have a much shorter lifespan. If they took things at a gem's pace, they'd never accomplish anything.]

So aside from submitting to the stupid cloaking device, it shouldn't be much of an issue for someone like me... I'm a very stand-out sort of Peridot.

[i mean if she was gonna go back in time anywhere in Earth culture, the 90's would probably be the best time for her.]

[Fugo takes a long time to consider his response. And then, very seriously, he says:]

Oh, really? I thought your goal was to be a stand-up Peridot.

[i'm so angry she's a peasant who isn't going to get that.]

...I'm already standing up.

It, er. Was a joke about how you're studying jokes. A stand-up comedian is a performance artist who gives their shows in front of an audience while "standing up" on a stage.

[slapfight]

You mean comedy is an actual human job? It's not just something they do for... fun?

[that sounds like the easiest job ever.]

Yes, that's right. Professionals are called "comedians". It's just one of many jobs in the entertainment industry.

Not to say that you can't do it for some. Some people just like to torment others with puns.

Ah yes, the forbidden comedy. Who would've thought there would be a way to combine my intelligence and my sense of humor!
