[When the cat Ratchet had talked to told him about magitek, he’d assumed it was a joke. When he was gifted with a piece of ‘jewelry’ to utilize it, he was absolutely sure he was being pranked. But here he was, using what basically looked like a cat collar as some kind of communication device, sending out transmissions to who knows where to who knows who.

It was definitely comical.]

Alright so, what’s the deal? ‘Magic’? That’s gotta be a joke right? This is just some kind of holographic technology, or some kinda, I dunno, modified radio wave, or...well I mean, I don’t really know exactly, but, one thing I do know - [He pauses, laughing, almost more at himself than anything else at the absurdity of it.]

...is that magic is not real.

With the right magic, you can do anything you can think of.

What makes you think it isn't real?

Common sense. Magic's...magic's stuff in stories. It's stuff you tell kids when they're too young to understand how stuff works.

Sounds like a dreary world you must come from, if magic is merely meant for children's stories.

Science is pretty cool. [Real nerdy, Ratchet.] I mean...well. I feel like that's a difference of opinion.

I never said it wasn't, but magic is different. It's not bound by the rules science is. Science lacks the raw beauty of magic.

Hm.

[Ratchet wasn't totally sure how to respond to that. He couldn't really disagree with something he'd never even seen. And he'd never thought of science as beautiful in the first place; interesting? Sure, depending on the topic. Often exciting, often unpredictable, often boring when you got right down to it.]

Does it have it's own rules?

The various kinds of magic do have their own rules, yes. But they can bend and be molded into something else, with the right amount of power and knowledge.

So this kinda thing...magic... [He still says it with a sort of tentative skepticism, like they were still talking in hypotheticals.]...it's just normal in your world?

Yes. The nation I am from has more natural magic than any other nation in our world. Our very culture is built around it.

You seem awful proud of that. [No offense intended.] Does that give you guys some kind of edge? Is it cool to be the guys with the most magic?

[Or maybe it was just like being the nation with the most advanced technology; an step up that could be used in a lot of different ways, depending on the type of people wielding it.]

When compared to some of the nations, I suppose it does. However Ionia is incredibly peaceful and somewhat isolated, so I can't say anything would ever be done with that edge.

Sorry, I...didn't mean to imply anything bad, just... [He shrugs.] I dunno. What do you do with something like that? And don't worry, that's rhetorical. Just....thinkin' out loud I guess. It's a lot to take in. You know?

I suppose it can be a little overwhelming, much in the way I find much of this technology confusing.
