people do not seem to think that if we were killed protecting them, that they would be at fault for our deaths, which would be the reverse

Alright gonna admit outright, you make a damn brilliant point there.
if there's one thing im not into it's dying for a cause I don't believe in.
But I guess most people would argue that it'd be a death caused by doing the 'right thing' or something along those lines.
