[Sai hasn't entirely worked out how to use this whole magic jewelry network thing yet, but the thought-typing is relatively straightforward enough. So:]

is it truly wise to be rescuing the qorral ?
should a significant number of them perish, it will be far easier to complete our secondary mission of stopping the mining efforts

[Is this extreme pragmatism, or poor humor? Haise can only wonder...]

We're not here to cause undue harm, either by inaction or otherwise. Allowing people to die could have a much more widespread effect than you seem to be accounting for... Even on the most basic level, there's how willing they would be to work with us.

Not to mention, it speaks to the sort of people we want to be. I don't want to be so cold that I consider someone's life a matter of convenience.

Yeah, sure. We could let 'em all die. If we wanted to be heartless assholes about it.

Under that logic, what reason do any of us have to help one another? Most of us come from different worlds and didn't know each other at all before our arrival. We were placed on a team, but that doesn't equate allegiance.

That doesn't change the fact that each of us is unique, and so are our lives. So are these peoples' lives. The existence of an individual can't be replaced, and so none are so casually expendable.

Allowing people to die in the name of convenience would make the general populace resistant to making our jobs any easier. For one thing, you're sending the message that their lives are worthless to us. In doing so, we'd be alienating them. We may even be considered hostiles ourselves. And that's just looking at it from the most pragmatic angle.

[personal profile] ex_adept136 2016-10-10 10:17 am (UTC)(link)
So you say. But if we think the way you suggest, who's to say that someone doesn't find you injured someday and consequently makes the executive decision that leaving you for dead is more efficient than tending your otherwise lethal wounds?

Particularly when faced with a combat situation, someone could be placing themselves at greater risk by stopping to help you. Provided you want to live, though, you might hope that they would decide to take that course of action even though it's not the more "efficient" course.

Destroying lives without reason, or letting them be extinguished because it seems convenient at the time, doesn't make us that much of a team. It promotes a mentality of "us" versus "them". And you don't ever know when you'd become the out-group yourself, for any number of unanticipated reasons like the one I described.

[My, he can only wonder what sorts of experiences his associate has had. Although Haise has been treated as a living weapon, had it hammered into his awareness that he is this above all and should expect death should he not fulfill expectations, that's never muted a desperate wish to continue existing.

He's tacitly accepted every job that's been placed before him, no matter how dangerous, but he always struggled to live on]

I'd say they're just as deserving of life as any of us are. Personally, I'd want to keep on living, and I wouldn't want the people around me to die if there was anything that I could do about it.

[Perhaps because he knows what it is to so fervently wish to keep existing]

If it's easier for you to view them as people who aren't expendable, maybe that's the way to look at it. You might benefit from spending some time among them; it's easier to see someone as a person if you get to know them.

Little lacking in any manner of humor or sense, aren't we?

You have any friends or loved ones?

You'd seriously just allow people to die when you could do something to stop it?

I think this is something that's more or less along the lines of 'better in theory than in practice'.

People don't like it when you suggest letting innocents die and all.

[The voice coming through the gem sounds cheerful, almost absurdly upbeat, yet still quite genuine.]

I think you raise a very legitimate question! Whether you decide to help them or not is entirely up to you and I wouldn't hold your choice against you.

That said, we DEFINITELY shouldn't be helping them rescue their equipment! That's just plain silly. Personally, I plan to destroy whatever the earthquake didn't already get the moment their backs are turned!
