Protecting a stranger because of a lack of desire to lose one's own friends is a little strange, true, but even though he's missing some pieces in how others make that particular leap, it's enough.]

i think i can understand now, to some extent
a question, however: are people not concerned about the potential dangers to their own friends?
why do they not prioritize the safety of themselves and their friends over the friends of others?

[See, he gets it but he doesn't really get it. That one degree of separation between endangering oneself beyond the call of duty for a friend and for a stranger who has friends is still a bit muddy.]
