[Sai hasn't entirely worked out how to use this whole magic jewelry network thing yet, but the thought-typing is relatively straightforward enough. So:]
is it truly wise to be rescuing the qorral ?
should a significant number of them perish, it will be far easier to complete our secondary mission of stopping the mining efforts

You have any friends or loved ones?
no subject
[He's read about that in one of his books. Not really sure what the purpose of it is, but at least he has a general academic understanding of the concept.]
i have two teammates
we are friends now, i think
[He's still shaky on the concept as a whole, but he's been trying.]
i do not see what this has to do with bonds, though
we are not friends with the qorral
in a few months, we will never see them again

Well, no. We aren't friends with the qorral. But for some people, it's relating to their situation. The qorral got friends and family that they don't wanna lose. You'll find some of your teammates are gonna empathize and not want them to lose their friends, since they feel the same way.
Would you protect your teammates because it makes sense, or because you care about 'em?
waves hands at thread orders for continuity
that is when you say one thing and mean the opposite, correct?
[But Twisted Fate's explanation echoes the logic he had gleaned from his conversation with Luffy, and that's a line of reasoning he can accept now. Protecting a stranger because of a lack of desire to lose one's own friends is a little strange, true, but even though he's missing some pieces in how others make that particular leap, it's enough.]
a month ago, i would have told you unquestioningly the former
[it had happened in practice, even, trapping Naruto in his jutsu during a mere training exercise.]
but i am not as certain now
my loyalty is already owed as fellow members of my village, but...
[But he wants them to succeed in retrieving Sasuke, doesn't he? He wants to help them do it, even if it's in defiance of the order to kill him. Is that what...caring feels like? He's only just been reintroduced to the idea of being capable of feelings at all--he's not exactly been able to examine them deeply at this point.]
i think i can understand now, to some extent
a question, however: are people not concerned about the potential dangers to their own friends?
why do they not prioritize the safety of themselves and their friends over the friends of others?
[See, he gets it but he doesn't really get it. That one degree of separation between endangering oneself beyond the call of duty for a friend and for a stranger who has friends is still a bit muddy.]
