It's occurred to me that since our membership shifts and our backgrounds vary so much, it might be good to compare what we're capable of. More to the point, I was thinking we might be able to help each other pick up relevant skills, if not hone the ones we already have.

If people are looking to train or think they could help others, why don't we discuss that here? I know at least a few of us don't have backgrounds in combat, for example. On our first day here I met someone who wasn't familiar with firearms but might get good use out of the skill, for another.

In my case, I have experience training others and can help with hand-to-hand combat. I can work with people ranging from average human strength to well above it. I've got some skill with swords and knives, but I wouldn't compare that to someone who specializes in them, and that's something I'd like to work on. In terms of non-combative skills, if someone wants to work on something like cooking, I'm reasonably helpful there.

Let's see how we can help each other improve.

o.... kay

so what's your student survival count so far, 30% make it, 70% die in the progress?
predomination: HEY EVERYONE HER BANKAI IS A ROCKET LAUNCHER. (⚛ you're as subtle as soifon's bankai)

[personal profile] predomination 2016-10-18 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh goodness no. I've never actually had a student die.

[physically. there's no accounting for emotional trauma.]

the way you say that doesn't make it sound reassuring

okay, but seriously — i'm suspecting you're some kind of ability user, like, magic, powers, something, otherwise this doesn't really make sense. so what is it? you drank water from a special well and it turned you superhuman? you've got special ninja powers? you're actually Merlin?
predomination: oh whoops. i wear sandals. my bad. (⚛ could you wait until i tie my shoes)

[personal profile] predomination 2016-10-21 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm curious what part of being particularly intense in my training methods makes me Merlin.

I'm not. It was just an interesting guess.

no man i just tried to list the most basic guesses for powers, and also you so didn't respond to anything there, don't think i didn't notice that

[how perceptive!!]

I don't want to sound full of myself. It's not as if we're not surrounded by incredibly powerful people. I assure you I'm nothing special.
figureitout: (◐ this ride is a journey)

[personal profile] figureitout 2016-10-31 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
and here you are, still not counting yourself out of that group of "incredibly powerful people"

but okay dude, sure. most of the people WITH some kind of powers aren't shy about telling what they have, i mean, look at all the other responses... i'm just saying, this whole modesty thing is not really sitting well with me.
predomination: you are SUPER blowing our cover right now (⚛ why are you in the window rukia)

[personal profile] predomination 2016-10-31 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
that's understandable.

counterpoint: we're discussing our abilities on an open network monitored and run by ALASTAIR, and this may be extremely paranoid of me, but for all their graciousness, I don't feel comfortable exposing all my trump cards when I don't know much about theirs.

Consider it a precaution just in case we ever stop being useful to them.
figureitout: (◐ lays behind the hills)

[personal profile] figureitout 2016-10-31 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
... dude, that's probably the most reasonable thing i've heard in this whole thing, hands down

i mean, if i had any trump cards to keep hidden i would, i don't trust them as far as i can throw them and that's not very far at all
predomination: because at any moment, i might suddenly snap and kill you. (⚛ i call this lesson "sudden death.")

[pragmatism: the ultimate weapon.]

I don't see the point in boasting or giving the specifics of what we can do unless it directly impacts others- like, for example, if you might become dangerous. [sorry chihiro, but it's true.] No one gains anything from it, beyond knowing what to expect from each other in a fight, and if we ever end up fighting one another, much less ALASTAIR, why would you want anyone to have that advantage over you?

I realize Sasaki-san's intention was to foster growth and respect among the team, and I believe it to be a beneficial endeavor, but helping one another can't come at the expense of our own lives, if we value them at all. Regardless of how we all feel about ALASTAIR, this situation isn't one we chose.

[ for real.... with this, Urahara has just about become Stiles' new favourite person among those responding to this post. ]

you said it. i mean, i'm totally here for sharing skills like, i don't know, training those who don't have combat experience [ though that's mainly because he has none and would like to learn not to be killed, thankuverymuch ] or teaching stuff like cooking or, uh, pop culture refs or stuff like that.

but if what ALASTAIR says is true, that we just fell through a rift by accident, that it could've been anyone else in our lives, too... then they don't know anything about us. and i don't care how much everyone's willing to sing their praises, an organization that recruits people for a shady purpose, withholds mission details and doesn't even ask whether we want to be here or not... yeah, if we can have some skills they don't know of, i'll sleep better at night.
predomination: i could have maybe told them to watch out for aizen. (⚛ in hindsight...)

riiiight. FUCKIN' SUFFIXES

[personal profile] predomination 2016-10-31 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. I like to be prepared for any eventuality.

[and that comes with a price of course- the price of leaving other people in the dark. he understands ALASTAIR in a way he isn't comfortable with. they remind him far too much of himself, and since he knows himself better than anyone, he knows not to trust any of this.]

And that means making sure no one knows what move you're likely to make. It might not sit well with some of our teammates, but they'll be thankful for it if it helps us survive this.

Besides most of us don't really have special skills or abilities we can teach others anyway.
figureitout: (◐they're trying to catch you)

[ he gets it -- sometimes, not trusting others means you have to keep secrets, to do things those more trusting will disapprove of... but in the end, it's still worth it. because at least that way when someone turns out to be less than trustworthy, they've already been there, waiting for it. ]

hey, you won't hear complaints from me

anyway-- nice to meet someone else who doesn't just blindly trust anyone and everyone. i'm stiles, stiles stilinski.

Urahara Kisuke. The pleasure's all mine, Stiles-san. Pragmatism is a rare trait.

[for good reason, he knows, but that doesn't change the fact that he's not usually standing in an ocean of them at any given point, and it can be frustrating.]
figureitout: (◐ but now it's time)

iiit's a wrap?

[personal profile] figureitout 2016-11-02 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
urahara, got it. and i could say the same, man.

[ ah.... he gets it, how he gets it. his best friend is an eternal optimist who trusts everyone, and so Stiles trusts no one-- because someone has to be the pragmatic one.

it's a nice feeling, to know someone's in his corner with this particular subject.
