[ Really, she had hoped to get her thoughts out about this sooner, but there are things she wants to Address and get people to think about now that it seems like a new year is upon them. It makes sense after the Christmas/Yule w/e celebrations that had taken place. For any that may know her though, she definitely seems very upbeat today. ]

Good day, everyone. [ It's the first time she's actually addressed the magitek like this though, which is why she tries to keep as formal as possible from the get go. ] My name is Sonia Nevermind, some of you may know me, others may not -- if that is the case, it is a pleasure to meet you now.

I was wondering... is it common for people of your worlds to make New Years Resolutions? This is where you make promises or goals for yourself for the new year.

For me, this year I hope to get stronger, so I may protect those I care about. I wish to learn more about medicine, to ensure that those with healing skills are not tiring themselves out. [ She's ticking these off with her fingers as she goes. ] I wish... to be more honest, about past instances that were beyond my control... but I feel are important to share with friends. I wish to spend more time with others, and learn more about the different cultures and languages we have within our team. If you were to consider this now... what would you choose?

Also, as we have been in good spirits recently, I also hoped we may try to get to know one another better with a game? There is one called "2 truths 1 lie", I believe, where we share two pieces of information that are "real" along with one piece of information that is a lie. As I understand, this is a hella good game to bond. For example: "I can speak 30 languages." "I have got a sister." "I can pilot a helicopter." Which one is incorrect?

Is it? [look at him trying to be scandalized] But it would break their little hearts to know that their beloved Kisuke-san didn't consider them as near and dear to his heart as a blood relation!

While she did pull that face for a moment, it finally shifts so she can frown at him instead. ]

I suppose not, but I did not expect you to... [ a beat ] ...have others close to you like that. I apologise for assuming as such. If that is not the case, then perhaps it is about the hat?

[ Is it just glued to your head tbh ]

...not that he can blame her. he does have an insufferable personality, which is why he is not gonna comment on that.] 'Fraid not. I have a certain aesthetic style that people who come into my shop expect, so I try to keep multiples.

[ Yes well... shhh... ]

So does that mean... I am not actually the first you have met? [ Her head tilts, though it does make sense with the way he acts. She isn't sure how it's the case... but it adds up. ]

[it's another one of those moments where he has to debate what he says- in the last game they played, he did confess to having lived in a noble house as a boy, though he never gave details about it. that's not something he can really get away with with Sonia.]

A dear friend of mine is a princess, though she doesn't choose to claim the title.

[ It isn't a bad thing to admit, at least not in her eyes. She doubts that this princess he knew lived a similar life if she doesn't choose to claim the title... but it's still something that lives with you. ]

Was there a reason she did not choose to claim it?

[ In some ways, Sonia cannot blame her. She hasn't lived her life for herself, it has always been her status as a princess before her as a person. You have to give a lot up to be royalty. ]

[technically, he knows two princesses other than her, but the... other is his sword. she doesn't exactly rule anything except his bloodlust most of the time.]

She's a free spirit. [it's... a bit difficult to talk about Yoruichi without sounding a bit wistful. their shared birthday having past, the little cat keychain here to mock him. it's all just little reminders of the fact that she's not here lingering.] There were too many responsibilities. She wanted to be free to make her own choices, rather than live up to her family's expectations.

[so she ran when he was exiled. she ran, and he never once believed it was entirely because she wanted to follow him.]

[ Well that's something at least. ]

You were close, were you not? [ At least the fact that he's talking like this about her makes it seem like that. ] If you have a person you care about, it is probably easier to refuse your duty. [ A beat, then: ] I did not have anyone like that, so... I claimed the title. My people were my everything.

Mmhmm. But I don't think it had very much to do with me at all. I never would have asked her to do it- it was just something she decided one day. [or so he tells himself. he knows Yoruichi like he knows his own heart. she would have found a way eventually- all he gave her was an excuse. she was ready to leave that night, even when he hadn't told her anything.]

Is that all it would take for you to forsake the title? Another person asking you to do it for them?

You may not have, but you may not have needed to either. [ Something to think about, and while it might not be the only reason it may have fed into her decision. ]

Though I cannot say yes or no to that question. It would take someone I would feel strongly for, would it not? Yet I have not had that kind of feeling.

[ She's talking about love. ]

From what I hear, there's not much room for "that" in the life of a princess. At least where I come from.

[they still typically do arranged marriages in Soul Society. a few broke free of that tradition, of course, but for the most part nobles need to produce heirs with strong reiatsu and decent breeding. even a unusually strong shinigami born in the Rukongai would never really be worthy of the Shihouin heir.]

There is not, no. [ Her smile softens a little, weakening. ] Not everyone is offered the choice of staying or running away before it is too late. Not everyone even realises there is a choice. It was only later that I had the chance to study abroad... and by that point my heart had already connected with my people. I cannot say for sure that if I had made friends before, when I was younger, whether I would have made the same choice.

I've always found nobility to be so constraining... [he laughs] Forgive me, Sonia-san. It isn't my place to either way, but I've seen how miserable traditions and responsibilities can make people.

Lineage and social status and sacrificing your own happiness for something that really doesn't amount to much... It doesn't make sense to me. There are much better causes to throw your heart behind- ones you choose, rather than indulge because you have never been allowed to find anything else.

[he pushes his hat down further over his eyes.] But I'm just a commoner. Of course I would say that.

Sometimes you have to put other people's happiness above your own. You have to hold your head up high and hold back what you really feel because if you don't you can bring pain and destruction in the form of war as well. Relations are delicate things, yet someone has to handle them. If it is not me, then it will only be someone else and perhaps they will be more weak hearted.

If you have never stepped into our shoes it is impossible to know the weight it carries, but I would not say it does not amount to much. our people trust in us, that is why the royal family still exists in my country. We gave our people hope, so do not make it sound as though my choice was not the best cause. Please.

[he chuckles, the sound mildly anxious- the sound of a man who realizes he's said precisely the wrong thing.] Th-that's not quite what I meant, Sonia-san.

what she's saying are the very beliefs that he defied, the ones that drove him into the forest that night against everyone's wishes, because he knew he was right, because he felt guilty about his hand in what Hiyori was going to face. but had he stayed at his post, they all would have died, and that blood would be on his hands.

he betrayed the wishes of an entire society, a society he swore to protect as a captain, for the lives of eight people. and it never occurred to him once that some might call that selfish.]

But it doesn't matter how I meant it. I didn't mean to offend you. I claim to be so forward-thinking about other people's beliefs and traditions, but I always stumble over this particular one.

[long-standing sore spot that it is.]

Was it not? [ Her voice sounds strangely cold saying it though, a complete switch to how her post began. Even her expression has iced over a little, more like her role as a princess than Sonia's true self at all. She wasn't kidding when she'd told Hinata that she has no idea how to tell the difference sometimes, because when it comes down to it this is what she defaults to. It's what she's used to, despite trying so hard to live normally as well.

Who even is the real Sonia Nevermind?

It only takes around 30 seconds or so but then she pulls her gaze away, eyes flickering down. ]

My best friends are boys. My country is peaceful. I have had to take part in many murder trials.

[Urahara looks away for a moment, looking deeply contemplative, and when he answers he still isn't looking at her.]

Your country can't be peaceful. A girl from a peaceful country wouldn't need to know anything about weapons.

Correct. [ Yet she still hasn't looked up either, there's one more hint in there about something she's been through, though the reality of it is that she's only seen it through what was recorded. She can't remember it in vivid detail. Not well enough to describe it anyway. ]

It is your turn again. [ When she looks back up again, that small yet simple smile has slipped back onto her face. ]

[part of him wonders if it was merely a part of her duties as a princess- taking part in trials. Another part says it wouldn't be so simple. The fun in this game is upping the stakes, making things that seem straightforward into complicated breadcrumbs about their lives.]

So it's on me again...

I used to be a jailer. At least a dozen times, I stole koi fish from a neighbor's pond when I was a kid. I've killed people who didn't deserve it.

[ She doesn't seem to plan on confirming or explaining that in more detail, but then the options he gives are not much better are they? Her hand curls up on her lap, and she has to hold her breath for a second to steady her breathing, to keep her expression straight.

After their conversation, the two worst options there could indeed be true. Yet, a part of her wants to believe that despite what he'd said about himself, there is something simpler, warmer inside him too. Any kid might try and take a fish. ]

[he smiles a bit sadly. It's almost funny how wavering their relationship is that the third one could be true.] My adjutant used to call me a "yard hack."

[so that's a no.] I'll spare you the stress of guessing that one. The third is the lie. Though I guess there could be some debate on what "deserving it" entails, but I try to avoid direct fights if I can. If someone comes at me with the intent to kill or threatens what I'm trying to protect, however...

[ Well she'd assumed that because of the way he spoke of herself. She had thought... maybe they had that in common as well. It's actually a bit of a relief it isn't. ]

"Yard hack"? What does that mean? [ She's trying to keep her voice and hands steady though, because in some ways she considers him lucky, if they are the only instances he's done horrific things. They probably are not innocent if they're trying to kill or threaten him or someone he cares about. That's something.

It isn't taking an armored car and knocking over innocent people for the hell of it.

She doesn't say anything else though, just lets her jaw stiffen as she fights to keep her eyes ahead, expression straight. ]

It's someone who struts around in front of prisoners, lording their power over them. [he shrugs, his expression schooled. he knows damn well his lie was the wrong nerve to hit, though part of him wondered if maybe it would give her some sort of clarity on the sort of monster he is.

because when it comes down to it, she may have a lot on her conscience, but he's the one who ripped apart a few Taraxa-infected Qorral with a single command. if he can do that, imagine what else he could do if he got a mind to.] I never once did that, but Hiyori-san was stubborn and not very fond of my job. Not that I could blame her- I wasn't fond of it either.

I see. It does seem like a rather unfortunate job, yet I suppose someone must do it.

[ And nope, it doesn't. Her expression hasn't shifted either, but she'll struggle with this for a while when she stops responding to people on here.

At least Kaz has proven himself to be equally as awful... smh.

Really though, she had taken down enough of the Taraxa-infected Qorral as well, and she knows all too well that back home it could have been her being shot down. Swings and roundabouts, man. It is what it is. ]

[well, if nothing else can be said of it, he does know when someone has hit their limit.]
