[about four or so hours after the infiltration of the Mothership mission begins, a message appears on the network. it's in text, mostly because. . . uh. talking into one's magitek about an undercover mission while surrounded by enemy agents is probably not wise]

So has anyone come up with a code name for themselves yet?

[. . . yep. . .]

An undercover spy mission seems like a good chance for just that. Think about it-- you can finally be the person you've always wanted to be with the name you've always wanted to have. Viking. Sapphire. Velociraptor. I think the possibilities are pretty endless.

[THAT SAID]

Though it'd probably be nice to meet all of you without the mask of a code name, first. I keep running into people I don't know, and I can't tell who is an ally and who isn't.

I call dibs on the name 002.

[a very serious post during a very serious mission? also? help the new guy out by introducing yourself so he can stop freaking out every time he runs into someone new!!]

I see. And is there any particular reason why that story appealed to you?

It makes 002 a dark and brooding protagonist.
Someone who just wants to find some closure for 001's death.
Those sorts of characters are pretty overdone, but still exceedingly popular.

Don't you think you'd be better off focusing your efforts on the task at hand, rather than getting too hung up on a backstory?

[Although to be fair, despite how seriously he takes the taraxa issue, how much he wants to see it brought to a close...he'd initially been planning to choose a support agent backstory based entirely around being able to wear a suit. Luckily he'd been talked out of it, and into a role more suitable for suitable for him, but the intention was there regardless.]

[he lets out a small huff, not that Giovanni can see it. it's a legitimate question, but! Akira likes to think he's got it under control]

[He doesn't quite believe him, but then again, he's come across a number of outlandish backstories already. This one is largely straightforward in comparison.]

I intended to just go by Giovanni, myself.

Is that your real name?

[he asks because this was, of course, the second purpose of his message: introducing and meeting his teammates so he could recognize who was a friend and who was a foe while undercover on this ship]

If you really did want a code name, though, I'd suggest Hound.

[He supposes there's nothing particularly wrong with that-- 'hound' is a fairly good descriptor of what he is, suits his 'backstory' well enough, considering he'd been persuaded, in the end, not to stray far from the truth.]

It's fitting, but I have to wonder how necessary it really is.

Never hurts to have one if you need one in a pinch, though.

I suppose using a code name doesn't exactly cause any harm. A little awkward if I were to introduce myself as Hound, only for a fellow Audentes to come along and unwittingly call me Giovanni, however.

You could always pretend your full name is. . . "Hound Giovanni."
If that happens.

Or claim Hound is a nickname.

[It's better than the only other nickname he ever had, years ago...Crybaby Giovanni...]

Who knows?
You might find that Hound reflects your true self more than Giovanni does.

Well. Considering I chose it as a descriptor, that's not too far off the mark.

Actually, dogs are pretty okay.
I do like the way their tails wag when they greet you at the front door.

But nothing beats a cat.

I can't say I agree.

[Where once he had no strong opinion on cats, this all changed after visiting the cat planet and they all ostracised and even attacked him on occasion, sensing the dog in him. It put him off, to say the least.]
