It's occurred to me that since our membership shifts and our backgrounds vary so much, it might be good to compare what we're capable of. More to the point, I was thinking we might be able to help each other pick up relevant skills, if not hone the ones we already have.

If people are looking to train or think they could help others, why don't we discuss that here? I know at least a few of us don't have backgrounds in combat, for example. On our first day here I met someone who wasn't familiar with firearms but might get good use out of the skill, for another.

In my case, I have experience training others and can help with hand-to-hand combat. I can work with people ranging from average human strength to well above it. I've got some skill with swords and knives, but I wouldn't compare that to someone who specializes in them, and that's something I'd like to work on. In terms of non-combative skills, if someone wants to work on something like cooking, I'm reasonably helpful there.

Let's see how we can help each other improve.

[ for a long, long, long while Stiles considers what skills he could offer to teach others — google-fu? not exactly relevant here. how to keep his jeep running? his jeep isn't here, nobody cares. how to make a healthy salad or his mom's lasagna? uhh, most people can probably cook, and they have the kitchens in Oska anyway.

right, going for the other side of this post, then.
]

so, if anyone's really enthusiastic about hypothetically teaching someone how to shoot a gun or the basics of hand-to-hand combat or anything that has to do with martial arts or survival skills, then... maybe consider making that less hypothetical?

[ pls?? he's good on the magic front, at least, thanks Loki ]

and in the spirit of reciprocal offers, i guess if there's someone who wants to talk about supernatural stuff, creatures of the night, weird magic rituals... i'm your guy. or if you want recs on what movies to watch back in The Headquarters, that works too.

What passes for really enthusiastic?

uh... i didn't think that far, man, i'll take "reluctantly willing to teach"

[personal profile] racking 2016-10-19 03:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I was just teasing. I wouldn't mind teaching you what I know. Do you have any experience at all?
figureitout: (◐ when the night fades away)

[personal profile] figureitout 2016-10-21 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
... i guess i walked into that one

but seriously dude, thanks! that depends on what counts as experience, i mean, i haven't taken any actual self-defense classes or anything but so far i've nailed the staying alive part
racking: (36.)

[personal profile] racking 2016-10-23 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
Well, that part is more key than anything else.

Am I right in assuming you haven't had any formal training?

[personal profile] figureitout 2016-10-24 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)

[personal profile] racking 2016-10-31 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Any kind of training would count. You'd be surprised at what comes in handy when you're in a fight.

[ tho shiro isn't about to invoke alien gladiator battles for an example. ]

But we'll start with the basics. You can give me movie recommendations afterwards, alright?
figureitout: (◐ but now it's time)

[personal profile] figureitout 2016-10-31 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
well then i'm totally counting it... half counting it. i play lacrosse back home, too.

[ which?? he can hit people with long sticks, does that count... ]

you got it, it's a deal!

sounds awesome, dude, where to start

if it's all weird stuff, what's the weirdest? like, on a scale from unimaginative crap like "my sparkly perfect classmate is a 100yo vampire" to true mythological gems like "woman eats lingonberry, gets pregnant"

[ he COULD mention certain mythological figures giving birth to an eight-legged horse, but out of respect for his maybe-friend-definitely-mentor he. won't. ]

I'd have to think about that, but I can tell you the grossest. Giant bug woman, composed of smaller bugs. Executed the failed leader of a coup by puking her small bugs onto the wannabe-usurper's face, and the bugs ate it off to bone.

We were standing about five feet away. That was, uh. An interesting day.

what sort of survival skills are you looking to learn?
figureitout: (◐ when the night fades away)

[personal profile] figureitout 2016-10-21 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
uh, anything really? i know the basics of "not getting brutally murdered" survival stuff but the more "go out into the woods with just a backpack and stay there for a month" kinda thing is what i was going for here

i mean, what if ALASTAIR throws us on a huge planet where we're all separated and have to live in the wilderness, i'm not exactly on board with starving there on my own or letting others starve
dishearten: \ (Default)

[personal profile] dishearten 2016-10-28 09:35 am (UTC)(link)
( while Graham technically knows plenty about both means of survival, luckily he's happier to teach the one Stiles is keen to learn. )

then I should be able to help you. for a long time, I lived on the land, not in town or village. surviving in the wilderness is something I have plenty of practice in, and considering the fact we've gotten stranded more than one occasion on missions, it's good to learn.

Graham, by the way.

i can help you with hand to hand
i mean, if you want

( Peter Parker probably doesn't seem like he'd know anything about that, but Stiles knows he's more than Peter Parker. it would be wrong not to make the offer for a friend. he doesn't know a technical martial art, but it's hard to argue he doesn't know at least a little bit about fighting. )

i mean, we can figure out some covert way to set it all up... but just for the record, there's a lot of people here who know their stuff, if you don't want to risk it i get it, you don't have to do this just because of me

but if you want to? I'd be happy to. honestly.

Does supernatural stuff include spirits and kami too? Or just the stuff movies get made out of, like you're talking about in the other thread.she has no idea what's up with vampires or anything like that, but it'd be nice to talk to someone else who may be human about the uh. spirit world... ]

Are you human?
figureitout: (◐they're trying to catch you)

[personal profile] figureitout 2016-10-21 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
it totally includes spirits and kami and everything, i'm familiar with spirits and creatures like kitsunes

[ since she went ahead to talk about "kami", he figures she'd at least know of the kitsune or fox spirits too... ]

yep, 100% human right here
onethousen: (smile | nice and genuine)

html went to die up there i'm so sorry

[personal profile] onethousen 2016-10-22 04:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Kitsune! I've met weasel spirits, but not fox spirits.

That's good to know. Not because not being human is bad or anything like that. I think sometimes it's easier to talk about things when you kind of have a sense of familiarity with... being that thing.

[ not like humanity is even close to being homogeneous, but compared to the ??? of spirits vs humans it's sure something. sort of. ]
