There we go. There you are. Much better, my distress is alleviated.

Weirdo.

What is the dialectical value of emoji?
no subject
:) / 😊 is much faster to type and takes up fewer characters than "I'm happy".
Although it can be used passive-aggressively, generally speaking any representation of a smile is meant to indicate that whoever made it is happy. It's a symbol that crosses over languages.

Do you think the stupid ones are linguistically universal too? Like the peach. Or for example, "monkey business" is an idiom so if it were used in a different language it would be nonsensical.

[he's happy. this is cute]

If you thought you were going to trip me up with this think again: that, along with "probably hetero", was one of the initial barriers

All right, good. I just had to make sure. I was trying to figure out if I'd missed some kind of sign of bad judgment all this time. Were you lying to me from the start? "Oh no it will never work" you said, all the while drawing hearts around Asher's username.
this is so cheesy, i hate him
Lucky for me, I've got pretty decent aim.

I'm just going to ignore the rest of the replies to your comment, Giogio, they're stupid.
To answer your questions: sadly no. Although it might depend on what they stand for? For example, Millstone also likes to use eggplants to represent dicks (although if his is purple he really should see a doctor about it).
I'm not as familiar with the emojis Millstone uses (they must have been introduced post-2001) as I am with emoticons, which I specifically consider mixtures of symbols and alphabetical characters arranged to represent facial expressions rather than words. Examples include:
:) <-- a smile
;_; <-- crying
:[ <-- frowning; looks particularly angry if you give it eyebrows with a >
The point where it gets complicated, I think, is when symbols of items (like the peach and the eggplant) are used to represent other things, emotions, or specific idioms. If I had to guess, those are likely to be unique to peer groups or even the individual in question. If there are wider trends, it would be harder to study them from our point outside of time. One person does not a proper sample make.

I think that's for the best.
So some emojis can be sort of like inside jokes rather than having a broader dialectical meaning. That's interesting. It would be incredibly difficult to formulate a quantitative study from that, anyway. Case studies might be informative, but also I don't want to know any more about Asher's thoughts on eggplants.
I never really used emoticons until I got here, but I discovered really good ones that I prefer to use. Example:
(◕ᴗ◕✿)
I don't know why you'd use an emoji when you can do that instead.
no subject
It's ok. I don't think I have a patience for an interview with him on that subject, so you're safe regardless. Consider the case study cancelled.
Honestly that one is kind of unsettling... the eyes are too big. And they're so glassy. And why is there a flower inside its face? Has this emoticon been parasitized? Is that why the smile is so small? Where did those characters come from I have never seen those before.
no subject
What? No it isn't. The flower isn't inside its face, it's tucked into its hair. Stop overanalyzing it, it's a good one!
Here how about this:
(◠‿◠✿)
no subject
That would depend on the message. At the moment: menacing, because I've insulted the previous emoticon's (supposed) cuteness.
no subject
Good, I'll accept menacing. It'll get more menacing if you keep being dubious in parentheses, though. Is that really what you want?
